Dear Students,
Are you interested in international environmental and climate law as well as passionate about human rights and climate justice? Would you like to delve deeper into these topics, gain first practical experience, and participate in joint projects in these areas? You would like to collaborate with students from the Universidad de Chile and both national and international collaborating partners from academia, legal practice and civil society?
If you can imagine being part of an innovative and transnational project, then we look forward to receiving your applications:
The Climate Law in International Context (CLIC) program is looking for five students from each law faculty (Universidad de Chile and University of Hamburg) to join its second cohort starting this October/November!
Conducted as a hybrid program in English, CLIC has established a transnational “Climate Law Clinic” as part of a collaboration between the law faculties of the University of Hamburg and its partner university, the University of Chile, with a particular focus on North-South perspectives.
You can find out more about CLIC and its activities during the first pilot year here: https://www.jura.unihamburg.de/forschung/institute-forschungsstellen-und-zentren/iia/kooperationen-projekte/clic.html.
Feel also free to check out our LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/company/climate-law-ininternational-context-clic and Insta (@project_clic) accounts.
At the start of the project’s second cohort, students will receive in-depth instruction/training based on a curriculum developed by both universities in cooperation with collaborating partners from legal practice and civil society (such as Climate Clinic e.V., World’s Youth for Climate Justice, Green Legal Impact and Kanzlei Günther), covering areas of international climate and environmental law, human rights law, climate justice, as well as methodology and strategy in the field of climate and environmental litigation. Participating students will also have the opportunity to engage with legal theories and schools of though that are particularly relevant in this context, such as Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), (eco)feminist theory or ecocentric perspectives. In the longer term/Throughout the year, students will be prepared to apply the knowledge acquired in selected projects with practical relevance.
What can you expect next? – This time, the program will start with an online introductory phase beginning around mid-October/November 2025. Students will receive digital inputs that will enable them to acquire in-depth knowledge in the abovementioned fields of law. Initial practical research projects will also be launched. In addition, we plan to hold two in-person meetings, the realization of which depends on funding. Accordingly, an in-person meeting is to be held in Hamburg from 26 May to 5 June 2026. Furthermore, a second in-person meeting is envisaged to take place in Santiago de Chile in September/October 2026.
What does CLIC offer? – First of all, CLIC offers in-depth knowledge transfer in the above-mentioned areas and transnational cooperation and fruitful exchange between students, academic staff and other collaborating partners from academia, legal practice and civil society. In addition, CLIC aims to give students the opportunity to participate in the further development of the program and to act as cocreators of and multiplicators within and outside of CLIC. In this sense, CLIC is a project by and for students and is therefore based largely on student motivation and extracurricular commitment. The aim is for UHH students to be able to obtain at least their English language certificate by participating in the program. In addition, after at least one year of participation, a certificate of participation will be issued for all participating students.
Have we caught your interest? Then send your application by 15 October 2025 to clic.jura@uni-hamburg.de.
In order to apply, please enclose the following documents in English in your application:
- a letter of motivation (max. two pages) and
- a CV (table form).
Application requirements – In principle, any student enrolled at the faculty can apply. Due to the international character of the program, good English skills are a prerequisite for successful participation. We welcome diverse applications and would particularly encourage people with diversity characteristics (FLINTA*, QUILTBAG*, PoC, people with a migration background, first-generation academics, etc.) to apply.
Participation in the program requires the willingness to dedicate sufficient time to the project, particularly given the planned program duration of one year. In addition, particular motivation, dedication, teamwork skills, and a keen interest in climate and environmental law, human rights law, and climate justice are important drivers of the program’s success.
