Wir wollen einen Blick hinter die Kulissen des Gerichtssaals werfen und gemeinsam mit unserem Gast Mimi Tsankov über ihre Arbeit als Richterin im Migrationsrecht diskutieren.
Hon. Mimi Tsankov ist seit 2006 Richterin für Migrationsrecht und arbeitete am Los Angeles Immigration Court, Denver Immigration Court, und dem New York Immigration Court. Sie publiziert und referiert außerdem zu der menschenrechtlichen Verantwortung und beruflichen Verpflichtungen von Richter*innen, Kriminalisierung von Geflüchteten und Asylverfahren von minderjährigen Geflüchteten vor Gericht. Sie ist in zahlreichen Führungspositionen bei der American Bar Association, der Federal Bar Association und der National Association of Women Judges tätig, wobei ihr Schwerpunkt auf Rechtsstaatlichkeit und richterlicher Unabhängigkeit liegt.
Der Talk findet im Rahmen des Austausches zwischen der Refugee Law Clinic Hamburg, dem Lehrstuhl für Internationales Öffentliches Recht und Internationalen Menschenrechtschutz (IMR) und der Columbia Law School statt.

How does one take a decision on removing or detaining an Immigrant in the U.S.? What responsibility does a judge have in the decision-making process? Do politics influence judicial proceedings in Immigration Law? Together with our guest Honorable Mimi E. Tsankov,* President of the National Association of Immigration Judges, we want to take a look behind the scenes and discuss her work representing all of the sitting immigration judges in the United States.
The Honorable Mimi E. Tsankov has served as an immigration judge with the U.S. Department of Justice, Executive Office for Immigration Review, since 2006, where she has presided at the Los Angeles Immigration Court, the Denver Immigration Court, and the New York Immigration Court. She publishes and gives talks on issues such as the human rights and professional responsibilities of immigration judges, “crimmigration” and judicial proceedings of juvenile asylum seekers. Judge Tsankov teaches International Law and Justice at Fordham Law School, as well. She holds a wide range of leadership positions at the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the National Association of Women Judges, focusing on rule of law and judicial independence.
