In the summer semester, Dr. Rob Aerts offers an English-language seminar on Patent Law in Biotechnology.

Dr. Aerts is a European and international biopatent law expert, patent attorney and currently with ADM, a global nutrition and food processing company working on natural botanical ingredients, health-supporting food supplements and sustainable bio-based solutions. In addition, Dr. Aerts has served on a number of relevant bodies.

Among other things, the seminar deals with the characteristics of biotechnological inventions and biopatents, with the question of constitutional and democratic principles in biopatent law and with the various levels of legislation and legislative processes in Europe.

One selected example will be patent protection for Covid 19 vaccines, and the question of waiving patent protection in view of public health or use of compulsory licenses. Another example relates to patent language developed for protecting pharmaceuticals, and the question how specific this language is.

The seminar offers a general introduction into patent law before turning to biotechnology patent law, subsequently finishing with the two examples mentioned above. During the event there are ample examples from everyday practice, like how to read and interpret a patent, or how to write a patent claim. During the last sessions, presentations of the students can be given.

The following performance certificates can be acquired: foreign language certificate or seminar certificate (this in the case of a written work and oral presentation).

You do not need to register through STINE. Just come to the first session on April 23, 2-4 pm, room Rhs. UG 12.
